MaximsNewsNetwork: 23 September 2009 - UNTV: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and US President Barack Obama toast the United Nations at a luncheon in honor of heads of state and government.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hosted a luncheon today (23 September) in honor of heads of state and government.

The Secretary-General welcomed United States President Barack Obama and expressed gratitude the very encouraging things he has said about the United Nations, including his inspiring address at the General Assembly this morning.

Ban then proposed a toast to a family of nations that cares for all its members.

Obama lauded the Secretary-Generals work and his leadership, which he said has directly helped prevent the use and spread of nuclear weapons as well as improving the organizations peacekeeping efforts, battling hunger and food insecurity, and reminding all the world of the urgency and magnitude of the climate change challenge.

The luncheon for heads of stet and government is traditionally hosted every year by the Secretary-General at the opening of the General Debate.
