Tae Kwon Do pioneer C K Choi created "Punching Sparring Pattern," one of 19 Sparring Patterns to help martial artists to train for fighting or sparring. He lives in Vancouver, Canada. I took the video in 2009. Alex Gillis, www.akillingart.com.

  • Yeah, we have many more punches, too. Where did you study? I thought that at least an upper cut was a staple in every style!

  • Yes, he's a very good fighter, and he's a grandmaster with a lot of integrity.

  • I did this today @ a seminar with GM CK Choi

  • Hi Jazzysingh,

Are you guys in the UK? Where's the seminar? Did he show you the punches while sliding backwards?

  • @Barodollyo Ollyo is upwards in every case whether its a palm upward block (Sonbadak ollyo makgi) or upward punch. In Tae Kwon-Do ('ITF' style) we dont have a technical 'roundhouse kick' as General Choi developed different ways of performing techniques based on scientific principles. So the turning kick for us is roundhouse for WTF etc. The word we used for middle is 'Kaunde'. High is 'Nopunde' and Low is 'Najunde'. I guess its just differences in interpretation.

  • @Barodollyo Its interesting that there are different names for techniques across different styles of TKD. Upward punch for us (TAGB and also from the ITF TKD Encyclopedia written by Gen. Choi). is 'Ollyo Jirugi', turning punch is Dollyo Jirugi (angle punch is giokja jirugi both are very similar). Baro jirugi for us is obverse punch. Odd but interesting.

  • @Barodollyo GM Choi is using Tae Kwon-Do terms or those punches. Assuming you practise ITF style TKD, im sure u will be familiar with the names i am about to use. Uppercut is 'Upward punch' as in movement no. 5 of Pattern Hwa Rang (2nd kup), Hook Punch is 'turning' or 'angle' punch as in movement 30 of pattern Joong-Gun (4th Kup), and i dont need to patronise you by stating that the straight punch/jab is pretty self explanatory. Hope it helped.

  • Last year I entered for a seminar with him in the uk, it was sold out:( this is the first footage of him I found and he's really good!

    ITF-FTW!

    WTF-WTF?

  • We just did SEMINAR in Kelowna B.C. Canada as well, and did these sparring patterns.

  • Hi

Yeah I'm in the UK. GM Choi is doing a series of seminars with the TAGB at the moment, and I attended mine yesterday. We did the punches going forwards and backwards. We also did hammerfist and with open hand as well :)
