Using a 2" dial indicator on my lathe tailstock (fastened via a magnetic base) to measure carriage distance traveled. Very useful for making accurate measurements while turning!

  • May I ask what's the make and model model of your lathe? Very cool solution! I don't think there is any "Cosine error" involved in this setup. Thanks for these videos!

  • @rlewis1946 Please check out my blog at nyccnc.com - much information is included there, including info about the lathe; it is a MicroMark 7x14 minilathe.

  • It's better if you put the magnetic base on the ways instead of the tailstock ... this is more accurate and least likely to produce (i think they call it) sine error.

    What is Cosine error ?

I know I could google it but sometimes I get a better feel for what the answer realy is,Plus it gives a person a chance to shine :)

  • @EvilWeevilAnime On the lathe I use at school, I put the indicator on the way as well, but that's because the tailstock doesn't have a flat surface on which to mount an indicator (it's also in a nicer position to read). However, with this arrangement, there doesn't appear to be any cosine error because the axis of the indicator is parallel with the spindle axis. It also appears that there isn't enough room between the carriage and the headstock if he were machining close to the chuck.

  • Very informative. I have some questions and I'll try to email them to you.
