Performance by Oboist/Composer Philip Freihofner of his composition "It's Only the Wind,"
Nov. 7, 2009, Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland CA,
San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra.
Program Notes:
Composer, oboist and synthesist Philip Freihofner has been performing with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra since 2004.
"It's Only the Wind," for oboe and electronics, is dedicated to Jared Diamond for his tremendous work "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed."
I've been particularly haunted by the story of Easter Island, a lush island paradise when it was first settled and a treeless wasteland half a century later. "It's Only the Wind" is in part an envisioning of what could be a future scene here in the USA. The oboe is a grim protagonist, making melodic use of one of the darker modes, the Phrygian, and extended techniques such as multiphonics, in a desolate and foreboding sonic landscape.
The score and electronic accompaniment to "It's Only the Wind" was completed three days before this live concert recording.
I'll probably do a bit more tinkering with the piece. I hope to have a studio recording of this and others available as part of a CD or EP in 2010. If you'd like to be notified of this or upcoming performances, please write me at phil@adonax.com or visit www.adonax.com.
Really beautiful, and totally evocative of Easter Island and its history!
