21 years old- Graduation Recital
Biography:
Marina Thibeault, born in 1989, from Québec City, is currently completing her Master's degree under Bruno Giuranna at the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana. In 2011, she graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with both Roberto Díaz, and Michael Tree.
Ms. Thibeault has performed as a soloist with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Marienbad Orchestra, North Czech Philharmonic, and the Západočeský Symphony Orchestra. While her studies in Switzerland, she frequently plays with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, the Orchestra de Camera di Lugano and various chamber music series. At the age of 17, the New York String Orchestra Seminar appointed her principal viola in two concerts at Carnegie Hall. During this last year, Marina has lead the viola section of Les Violons du Roy for 3 different programs.

In 2009 Ms. Thibeault made her Bargemusic debut with Andy Simionescu, Mark Peskanov, Matt Haimovitz, and Navah Perlman. She has attended numerous festivals, such as the Scotia Festival of Music, Perlman Music Program, Deer Valley Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Domaine Forget. During the summer of 2010, she was selected to participate in the Taos chamber music festival, and in July 2011, she took part in the FontaineBleau festival, where she received the "Milka viola award", as well as the "Chamber music prize."

As the 2007 winner of "Les auditions Jeunes Artistes de Radio-Canada", Ms. Thibeault made a recording with CBC that has been broadcast in Canada and France. She was also a 2008 prize-winner at Hradec's Beethoven International Music Competition in the Czech Republic, after which she gave recitals in Prague and Teplice, during the Music Festival Ludwig van Beethoven.

Marina is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

  • Wonderful, sensitive playing, very helpful to me as I write a program note on the piece. Thank you!

  • @jonny1broom Thanks to you and your kind comment!

  • Beautiful playing and composition--first hearing of this work for me! Unusual-looking viola that Michael Tree is playing--modern instrument?

  • @Wavewolfaroha He plays on a modern viola by japanese maker iizuka, who is based outside Philadelphia I believe... Hope that helps!

  • @Wavewolfaroha Thank you! It was only a couple of weeks 'old' and still smelled of varnish when I had my graduation recital! It's been like watching a baby grow since April. Made by Ovington, New-York.

  • What a great privilege it must be to know Michael Tree!!

  • @PadillaMitchell Indeed! He is by far the nicest man on earth. I was very lucky to be under his influence for 4 years...

  • Beautiful playing. Sounds like one instrument, huge and smooth!

  • B-E-A-utiful

  • walter? from breaking bad???

  • @Msgrenouille7 Thank you! That is why the instrument looks so much like the one played by Scott Slapin, also made by Iizuka. Your instrument also has a beautiful tone--yes, as much in the playing as the viola!
