Gold Star Records #669
Texas Blues Man Lightnin' Hopkins plays and sings on this one. Do those licks sound Cliche to you? They probably do because Lightnin' created them and thousands of guitar players who came after him copped these licks (or a slight variation) for their own recordings. This record was hard to play. I had to use graphite spray as a lubricant on the surface and use a medium dull needle to get it to play at the right speed. Not many spins left in it but at least it's here on YouTube now.

This is a 1930s-40's Sears Silvertone Crank style Victrola record player. It's the model that courting couples would bring on their picnics. No electricity needed! I saw one like this in an episode of M*A*S*H* when Hawkeye was examining one of those Bombshell Nurses... More 78 classic records on video coming soon.. I have the Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Jordan, Woody Herman, Guy Lombardo, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, BB King, Artie Shaw, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Les Paul w/Mary Ford, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Lightnin' Hopkins and lots of old Swing Era records... Stay Tuned!

  • Stop playing your rare and valuable Blues 78s on an old Victrola with a steel needle that's going to destroy the grooves!! Get a modern turntable that's outfitted for playing 78s, connected to some quality amplification, and here this music the way it's meant to be heard! You'll thank me later.

  • FYI:

I'm aware the steel needles degrade the record somewhat.

Playing these records with a steel needle on this crank style record player IS THE WAY THEY WERE MEANT TO BE HEARD! Not with some lightweight needle through an amplifier. I make these videos so I don't (or rarely) have to use the needle to play them and so I can share them with the public AS THEY WERE MEANT TO BE HEARD. The only way I'll Thank YOU is if you STOP TRYING to TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO with their own possessions.

  • Lightning made his first recordings in 1946 when a lot of rural folk in the south still didn't have access to or couldn't afford electricity. This is exactly how many of them first heard a Lightning Hopkins record .

  • how they were meant to be heard? or the only way it was possible to hear these tunes?

it would sound better using new turntables my man, regardless if this is "HOW THEY WERE MEANT TO BE HEARD"

    lol.

    get with it dawg

  • Freakin' cool.
