Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf wrote on his blog that the federal budget is on an unsustainable path. Are you concerned about U.S. federal debt? Elmendorf told lawmakers the proposed health care plan will likely expand the federal deficit. Would you support an increase in debt to implement health care reform? One suggested way to pay for health care is to tax employee benefits. Do you think this is a good idea?
Yes, plenty of us are debt free, and we expect our government to be debt free, too. There may be reason for short term indebtedness, but not long term. When I've borrowed money in the past, I pay it off quickly. There is no sense in living with debt . . . . life is so much more expensive that way.

The government can print money, so they don't have a lot of incentive to spend frugally. There are so many lawyers in Congress and we need more conservative accountants who have a better idea of the benefit of being debt free. It use to be that if Congress got $1.00 in taxes, they spent $1.50. They haven't learned, and I'm sure it's much worse now.
