A documentary of Kenny Wheeler on BBC Omnibus.

The 2nd part includes studio footage of Azimuth, the trio of Wheeler, John Taylor (p) and Norma Winstone (vo). The occasion seems to be the recording session for their first album on ECM "Azimuth". The closing song is "0".

Original transmission: Oct-27-77, BBC1
Repeat transmission: Feb-04-05, BBC4

  • Thanks for putting this on YouTube. Somewhere I have a reel-to-reel recording of the original Maida Vale radio broadcast. Great stuff. Shame it has never been released as a commercial CD.

  • My God. I also remember this first time round. I was 19 years old in 1977 madly keen on music and trying hard to play the cornet and trumpet. For me watching this now has such a wistful quality .... a pre digital and internet age where we went to a bank teller to get money and breezed throuugh security at airports. Wish I could step back into that world just for a single hour ....

  • Remember this first round. Was it really 33yrs ago?

  • Oops, meant to say that the first Azimuth composition on this film is a section of "Jacob" from the first, "eponymous" LP on ECM.

  • Again thanks for seeing this. I don't think it's Talent Studio featured in the film, it's probably Maida Vale again.

Growing up near Heathrow it was great to see those old airliners again - including that old Trident 3 that Norma John and Kenny were boarding.

    A great video.

  • In love with this trio Azimuth (Wheeler, Winstone, Taylor) and all of their albums. Will have to reorder the cd's. There's also a double cd Azimuth album featuring 12 string guitarist Ralph Towner on it.

  • Brilliant, thanks!

  • rare occasion to see those wonderfull musicians - so young - i could only discover them 15 years later...

wheeler is one of the greatest composers of jazz (although what we hear here is probably by taylor)

    thx so much

  • Wonderful to see this again.

  • Great Video - Thanks for uploading!
