Emperor fue una banda noruega de black metal fundada en 1991 por el vocalista y guitarrista Vegard Sverre "Ihsahn" Tveitan, el batería Tomas "Samoth" Haugen y el bajista Håvard "Mortiis" Ellefsen en Notodden, Telemark.
Sus letras, en sus primeros años, trataban sobre el satanismo, posteriormente sobre ideas vikingas y paganas, centrándose en la oscuridad, la fuerza del ser humano, el ocultismo, leyendas del folklore noruego, etc.

The Laws of Physics regarding Metal Theory clearly state that bands decay over time due to the residual build up of Suck Particles (or SP). Emperor seems to defy our current understanding of the Laws of Physics.
