Harry Truman was the last president to truly be a normal citizen on leaving office. He did not have any Secret Service or privileges at all, you could knock on the door of his home in Independence Missouri and he would answer the door. He also washed his own socks and underpants all his life as instructed by his mother from an early age. And that included his time in the White House. You wouldn't catch many presidents doing that task of humility today

@NewDaysOldWays1 Its my vague recollection, so don't quote me, he may have been Secret Service guy, but he said whenever the cameras were around Carter would grab his bag from the aides and when the cameras were gone, he would give it back just as fast. I never disliked Carter but it was interesting hearing this among some other trivia about him. I mean he's just come out of the hospital with enough detail around him to warrant them carrying the bag than him.
