Long live the Soviet Union!

English translation:

My motherland is broad,
It has many forest, fields and rivers.
I know of no other country
Where a person can breathe so freely.

From Moscow to the very hinterlands
From southern mountains to northern seas
A person will feel like an owner
Of his immense motherland.

Everywhere life is free and wide,
Just as the Volga flows completely.
The way is open to the young everywhere;
The old are everywhere held in esteem.

Over our country a spring wind blows;
With every day one lives happier.
No one on earth knows how
To laugh or love better than us.

But we will sternly knit up our brow
If an enemy wants to break us.
We love our motherland, like a bride;
And we care of her, like our tender mother.

Italian translation:

Mia cara grande madrepatria,

  • @Zerkezhi Sorry what I wrote was misleading. I didn't mean people in democracy should be loved as Stalin. It's true in democraty, the system is more important than the one leading at any given time. What I meant was the system, during Stalin's era is seen as good. Which means the times were not as bad as foreigners (that didn't experience it) makes it to be. It's also true grass is always greener on the other side, but 85% is a lot and express way more than that imo.

  • @CitanulFr

    An (fictious) example:

The tyranny of Leto Atreides II, which lasted for millenia ended with it being called "The Golden Age" a few hundred years later, whereas it was considered the worst age ever while he was still alive.

There are always people prefering the "ways of old" (pardon the expression); there have been after the fall of the Roman Empire, the tryanny of Vlad (the Impaler / Tepes) Draculea and the Church loosing its absolute position of power...there always will be.

  • @CitanulFr

not surprising, democrats don't build a cult of personality to such a degree and democrats are less important in democracy than democracy itself. (not so much with stalinism)

also: democracies tend to last quite a while, giving few chances of nostalgia for democracy itself.

also: people get nostalgic of about everything...in hindsight everything's always better. (eg British Empire, German/Russian/Etc. Monarchy, Third Reich (though the denazifciation limited that to a great degree)

  • @Zerkezhi In 2005 a poll showed that about 85% of the people born in 1931 or before were nostalgic of soviet era, those that well, actually lived during Stalin's era. Noone would give that much to any democrats past and present.
