Luke and Sandra talk about their farm -- how many birds they have, what their daily routine is like and some of the emergency features that their barns are equipped with.
Transcript:
Luke: We have a total of 20,500 laying hens on this farm.
Sandra: On average, we walk two to three times a day. We walk it more often when the birds are first in the barn just to train them to go to the nests to lay their eggs. As we walk the barns, we check the water lines to make sure the water is good and that the feed is good and we check the health of the birds to make sure there's no problems with any of the birds.
Luke: First thing in the morning when we come to the barns we check the water consumption and its all metered and feed consumption -- it's also on scales on each bin so we know exactly how many grams per bird they consume. We have automatic scales in the barn and they're just a round plate of approximately two feet in diameter and the birds will go on and off on their own and that gives us an average weight.
Sandra: The care of the birds is very important to us so we have emergency features on this farm. We have back up generators in case the hydro goes out which come on about ten to 15 seconds after the hydro goes out. We have an alarm system that phones the house or our cell phones and there's always somebody near by to make sure they get looked after.
