Philosopher, Alan Watts gives a lecture dealing with the failed drug policies of america. The lecture ends with questions from the audience and inevitably, the subject turns to questions and subjects regarding religion. An awesome lecture that spans the gamut.

  • Never actually thought about it like this before but he's absolutely right - all our laws pertaining to drugs, gambling, prostitution, euphanasia, etc are infact a throw back to the religious notion of 'sin' where any act of 'harm' against the body is a sleight against God, since God effectively owns your body (and soutl). Which of course, completely conflicts with all our other laws which take man to be self-autonomous and the sole owner and arbitrator of his body.

  • Totally. Its insane how weird and stupid the contradiction is when you think about it. Especially looking at how much we rely on scientific solutions to solve our problems rather than religious solutions.

  • You would think that the scientific method and scientific mentality would carry over into all our laws. Very frustrating.

  • No problem!

    Glad you liked it. :D

  • "The price is high because it's forbidden..."

It's not that we don't have real thinking minds in the west; it's simply that they are banned from all manner of public debate with the leadership.. (especially on topics as pressing - and intellectually trivial - as, "How can we reduce the inhuman suffering meted out by rivalling drug cartels in Mexico and South America?", for example, which could have been rectified aeons ago by ending immoral prosecution against harmless drug users.)

  • anyone know what year this was recorded?

  • He actually gave this lecture more than once, and there are other videos here depicting other lectures from him on the same subject.

    All Hail Alan Watts !

    :)

  • Brilliant man. Great upload.

  • Thank you ;-)
