Paul Badoosh has been working hard trying to record Plymouth/Devonport wartime heritage in spite of the efficient efforts of Plymouth City Council to destroy it!! The underground air raid shelter described below in March has now been mostly destroyed by Plymouth City Council working with the "Friends" of Devonport Park ( yes seems odd..who needs enemies!!) & funded by a Heritage Grant from the National Lottery (even odder). I was approached some time ago by the Friends of Devonport Park with a request that I help them find an intact underground air raid shelter with a view to opening in to the public - well I wish I never got involved with this lot as a superbly intact shelter has been almost completely destroyed in their heritage plan - certainly destroyed to any preservation point of view - in order to make the foundations for a child's "Tarzan" swing. I wonder how long Paul's discovery will last? I hear PCC & the "Friends" are looking for a site for a rubbish bin - ideal, just what is needed! As a Plymouth person I can only say that I have never seen such ignorance & wanton destruction by buffoons - than with this lot. There is no excuse for ignorance, save stupidity. They destroyed what Hitler could not. Plymouth Council always tells us that it needs new things - attractions - to bring visitors to Plymouth - & then it does this - its so sad it's funny - as I hear that in Devonport Park come this autumn, they plan to hold a "World War II" day - it would have been the star attraction - maybe a drawing of it on an "interpretation panel" will draw in the crowds?! Anyway, back to Paul, using fibre optics he found a patent passage in, & before long he was the first person to enter this shelter since the war. Here is his video. I wonder what child last played with that blue marble? Plymouth - WHY? - WHY don`t you care for our history & those who came before & above all those that fought for the free speech that lets me write this & tell the world what you are like? (in my opinion of course)
discusting they want to distory a piece of history!!

It's great to see this as I recall my Dad telling me about these shelters on walks through the Park in the early 1960's.
I can only hope the bureacrats and NIMBYs come to their senses. History is not always the cuddly mechandising driven activity necessarily used to support tourism, there is a strong place for relevant local hard history. I would hope this type of thing could support the National Curriculum but no doubt the Risk Assessment would prove too challenging in a litigious time!

You need to impress Plymouth city council to open some of the shelters and wartime sites. Allow the money grant to be used for the education and interest of residents and visitors, which is not happening.
I have seen so much destuction of plymouths heritage buildings, naval sites, valleys, trees etc.
Never to be replaced. WHY?

I'm so glad that you took this video. It is proof that Chris Coldwell from Plymouth City Council was lying when he said that they were filling in the shelter because there was nothing of importance down there. Well done.

PCC are very frustrating. Surely these places are of historical interest for preservation? If they have destroyed this one, where else are ther shelters undisturbed???? Is there anything left of the one that got a direct hit on north hill? I also remember family talking of a public shelter in greenbank area?
