I've always wanted to really practice push hands. I didn't get to when I was in Hung Gar at the time. I did take some Chin Na so I assume it's close, but there are no grabs it seems in this. I love the flow. Great job in trying!
For the guy in the green sash at the beginning of the video. When you're in that position turn your body to your left.Place your left hand inside of his right wrist. Hook your right arm around the outside of his right arm. Now turn towards your right, pulling towards you with your right and going away with your left.He will go with you bringing him off balance to his left.
It develops some very important things that will be extremely useful in a lot of other areas, from keeping balance (for old people) to fighting. Just as long as it is understood that this exercise is just a part of training progression, not an end goal in itself.
One of the most amazing transformations to see is when a big strong person learns to use intelligent focus and softness instead of just brute strength in push hands.
I have found this to be a very good way to improve ones balance, response and awareness. This is not a "complete" martial art in itself but does aid in developing the skills one needs, not only in self defense but in day to day life.
why is the man in black grabbing? i thought he was a teacher! strength vs strength. ego vs ego

Also, one really needs to try this for one's self the intricacies of this proactive are not evident by watching a video alone.

it's a specific skill, but it's way too specialized to be useful to anything other than what you see here.
