Sam Harris performs "Close Every Door" from the Broadway Musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", of which he starred as the lead of Joseph.

CLOSE EVERY DOOR
(From the Broadway Musical
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat)
Music and Lyrics by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Close every door to me
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light

Do what you want with me
Hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime
And torture my night

If my life were important I would ask
"Will I live or die?"
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone

For I know I shall find
My own peace of mind
For I have been promised
A land of my own

Close every door to me
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light

Just give me a number
Instead of my name
Forget all about me
And let me decay

I do not matter
I'm only one person
Destroy me completely
Then throw me away

If my life were important I would ask "Will I live or die?"
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone

For we know we shall find
Our own peace of mind
For we have been promised
A land of our own!

"Close Every Door" is a song from the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is the penultimate song of the first act of the musical, sung by Joseph while imprisoned for his supposed relationship with Potiphar's wife.

In addition to voicing Joseph's despair at being jailed for a crime he did not commit, the song appears to contain oblique references to the Jewish Holocaust of World War II. Lyrics such as "Just give me a number/Instead of my name ... Destroy me completely/Then throw me away" reflect the well-documented Nazi practices of tattooing numbers on imprisoned Jews and working them to death (or gassing them) in concentration camps, then burning the bodies or burying them in mass graves. The lyrics have even been incorporated into a Seder service for educators in New South Wales.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the second British musical theatre show written by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Its predecessor, The Likes of Us, was not performed until 2005.

Based on the "coat of many colors" story of Joseph from the Hebrew Bible's Book of Genesis, the show was first presented as a 15-minute pop cantata at Colet Court School in London in 1968. After many transformations and expansions, and West End and Broadway productions, it was adapted as a straight-to-video film, starring Donny Osmond, in 1999.

The show has very little spoken dialogue, it is sung-through almost completely. It runs under two hours and is occasionally performed without intermission. Its family-friendly storyline, universal themes, and catchy music have made Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat one of the most dependably profitable titles in musical theatre, particularly when producers cast a headlining star — and, according to the Really Useful Group, more than 20,000 schools and amateur theatre groups have successfully put on productions.

  • I saw Sam sing this live at the Fox Theater back in the early to mid '90's. When he came out and sang the encore the walls literally shook! I've seen most every popular play out there and that song still sticks on my mind. This is a great version, but imagine it with a full orchestra!

  • One of my friends(she's a figure skater) is going to skate to this song in a competition. Good song.

  • can't even describe how great it is to hear Sam sing this song after 15 long years. never thought I would get to again! I was fortunate to share the stage with Sam in the production of Joseph when it came through Nashville back in '95. I was one of the kids in the choir! it was a priveledge watching him perform the role for a few weeks. years later I got to play Joseph in a highschool production, and if it weren't for Sam, I wouldn't have had the inspiration I needed! thank you, Sam.

  • Sensational... Just speechless.

  • WOW! That was amazing Sam! I never got to see you do this live in the play...Oh how I wish I did....I did see Donny opening night and he was amazing, but gotta say Sam...You take it on this song!!!

    Love ya!

    Angie...your gal in Florida

  • Chills.

  • wow!!! outstanding!

  • spectacular!! we've been waiting for this one for a LONG time!! it just doesn't get better than this.

  • It's amazing, this is a song from my favorite musical that I always dreamed of you doing it. I don't make song requests as a rule, but this was an answer to a prayer.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Joseph will always have a special place for me, being the first opportunity to see Sam live. So dynamic!
