  • If you released hundreds of thousands of black convicts that are in prison for petty drug crimes, the states would spend far less money on housing convicts. Ron Paul cannot phase out state welfare programs, only federal programs. In this scenario the state goes from paying 30,000 dollars a year to house a convict to around or less than 20k a year to give them welfare. The states could then spend the extra money to make work programs or whatever they want to put those folks to good use.

  • Basically it would create Australia! Pretty productive people really.

  • College is expensive because of Federal funding. There's no way that he would or could 'slash' all those programs in one perfect storm, but if and when we go broke, they will be cut in one foul swoop. The question is, how would you feel if you were rotting in prison for some ridiculous amount of time because of arcane 'mandatory sentencing' law? The same scenario was probably run by Lincoln. You can't place right and wrong against unknown fear. It's about right and wrong. Period.

  • I know what would happen! People like me would end up taking them in... sigh...

  • @dmg46664 Australia - censorship

    :D

  • I'll answer in the theoretical, ceteris paribus. Where does all the money go? The prison industrial complex and social services eat up tremendous amounts of money that is summarily abused by the government. Once those are gone money is back in peoples' pockets; they now have more to spend or invest. New businesses are likely to be created or existing businesses are likely to expand to meet demand, which will tend to loosen hiring requirements and absorb many of those disaffected.

  • That’s the problem with the world…

too many SAFETY nets and too many bludgers using them.

  • Why would want to keep people locked up and keep them from their freedom?

  • Perhaps we should ask the jailed individuals if they want to be released or stay in jail where they have meals and a roof over their heads. Or maybe the 26,000 a year spent on each inmate should be channeled to getting these people a trade so they can stand up on their own. Any way you look at it, good point but I would still want to break the cycle, how many black and hispanic young men lose their lives either in Jail or on the street drug wars. Let's save some lives...right???

  • How dare you attack RP's domestic policies with logic and reason!

  • Protean, this proposition is incorrect and not a fair representation of Dr. Paul's stances.

But to answer your hypothetical question, that scenario would not be good for society.

Now can you talk about the military cuts that would see resources channeled back into Social Services that Dr. Paul proposes?

  • The answer to your question is the one you do not want. You already know the answer. The real question is: Can you handle it?

And everyone can take the same amount of punishment, some choose not to be able to sustain.
