Americana: Dog sledding

Sled dogs are the athletes of the animal kingdom. That's what Tom Palmer thinks. "There's no animal on the face of this Earth that is as capable as these dogs," said Palmer. The 68-year-old retired naval architect has been dog-sled racing for the past 45 years. He took The Daily for a ride, giving us a unique look into this fundamentally American sport.

Sled dogs are usually mixed breeds that the racers breed or find. Huskies are used too for racing. Malamutes were bred for heavy loads so are not raced much.

What breed are the dogs on his team? I feel ignorant but I thought usually husky and malamute type breeds were generally used for sledding o.o
