Thomas Halpin-violin; Kiyomi Shiba-piano.
Performed March 18, 1992, State University of New York at Buffalo, Slee Concert Hall
The concert was a birthday tribute to Mr. Anthony Wrona and honored his career as a violin maker. The program was performed on violins which Mr. Wrona built between 1961 and 1990.
The violin used to perform the Leclair Sonata was catalog #60 in Mr. Wrona's mature output. It is a copy of the 1715 "Cessole" Stradivari, and was built in 1984. Joseph Rudnicks of Arizona commissioned the violin and dedicated it to his wife Camille. Mr. Rudnicks took an unusual personal interest in the process of his violin's construction, actually travelling to Mr. Wrona's Cheektowaga shop to select for himself the pieces of the120-year-old maple and spruce from which the instrument would be made.
i made a number of visits to Tony's shop (actually his living room) when i was a student in the 1970's. he and his wife were probably two of the nicest people i've ever met. they were always very encouraging, interested in what i was doing, etc. it was always a pleasant experience to stop by and get some work done on my fiddle.
