Old fart reporting - I learned to fly at this airfield in 1955. I was a young Midshipman in the Royal Navy. We flew Provosts (radial engine, propellor, not the jets). My CFI was Flight Sergeant Valpy - lovely man. He pushed me hard and I soloed after 7h 30 m at Newton, just down the A46. It was all grass - they didn't trust us to keep a tail-dragger straight on concrete runways. accommodation blocks seem to have disappeared.

Learned to fly at Syreston in 1975 with Hamesh Brown and Cheyenne Chin. First solo in a Slingsby T-21. Still flying today at Bermuda High Soaring Club in South Carolina, USA. Whoo-hoo...

Nice, been gliding at Syerston a few times, but my school CCF only had slots with 644 Sqn. I did my scholarship down in Abingdon though.. still in the Vigis :)
I got to fly in a Vigi once though, theyre a lot more peaceful and more responsive really, theyre quite nice birds :)
