Sabarimala is 5 km trek from Pamba road head. From the Pamba Ganapati temple devotees start the steep climb of Neelimela to reach Appchimedu. Here devotees throw rice balls (undayeriyal). From here the route is plane. The next point is coconut breaking point with resting facilities. A little up is the Sharamkuthi. From here the queue for darshan starts. After long hours (5 to 10 hour) in queue one gets darshan. The Sabarimala temple has a flagpost and gold plated 18 steps (pathinettampadi). Climbing of Pathinettampadi without Irumudikettu is strictly prohibited.

The return route is of less gradient and easy. The climbing down of Neelimala via Ayyappan road is very easy.
