I didn't get the impression they were trying to 'suggest' anything. I think Tom was just being friendly to Carly as a favor to Lisa and that was all. Back then, he and Margo had a pretty stable marriage and Tom has never really been the 'fling' type. Look how quick he regretted his one-night stand with Emily.

When did Nikki first arrive on the show? There's some confusion about via Julie Poll's book.

That would have been fascinating a Tom/Carly fling, but I do believe that Carly was already pregnant with Mike's child (Nora, the one she miscarried; but I don't think she knew it, yet).

I do. Notice Lily's hair changed at around the same time, although Lily's hair change would at least last until 1997. Kim's hair change wouldn't only last a few more weeks. This Christmas was also the end of Julie Poll's anniversary book history of the show.
