Political squabbles mean Belgium has been without a federal government for 15 months.

A caretaker government with limited powers is in charge.

Europe has been plunged into a deep economic funk.

Belgians, however, seem oblivious to the chaos around them.

England responded to bad economic news with cuts, but Belgium's caretaker government does not have the power.

Belgians were spared from austerity measures.

It doesn't hurt that salaries and pensions are indexed to inflation.

Belgium is experiencing healthy growth while many Eurozone rivals remain stalled.

Maybe more countries should go without governments.

  • It's true, but we don't have any solutions. Just read the previous comments, the flemish people think that all the french speaker just enjoy about the money, don't want to learn dutch, don't work etc. I speak 5 differents languages (french-nederlands-deutsch-espanol and english), I wake up every day to work since 15 years. I'm walloon and of course I don't want to pay for people who take advantage of our money, but it's too easy to say that 's only the walloons, flemish people enjoy this too !

  • Give me the fucking job, I'll fix everything.

  • you must update urgently

  • It's not exactly a government shutdown if services are still running, is it? Come on you commies! Stop sending out those scrounging teachers and doctors their cheques! Stop paying welfare queens like police, soldiers and firemen for sitting around when they do NOTHING most of the time, anyway! PAUL RON KNOW TROOT!

  • @Fabcra Don't worry man, they're enough Flemish people who don't think you guys are lazy (like me ^_^ ). I think we're just one and the same people, Belgians, I don't believe in the separation of our country into a Dutch, French, German and mix of all three+1 language part. It's just silly!

Then again, things are looking bright again today, with the new agreement of my dear friend mr. Di Rupo! May Belgian people once come to an understanding with each other :-)

  • Chuck Norris is gonna solve our problem

  • I for one feel I'm a Belgian first,a Limburger second and Flemish last!I have more ties to the provence Liège than to the provence Antwerpen! That being said I adore all Belgians :) we are great and should be proud of that!

  • @FlorentChif Another problem that would be solved with actual national parties/elections!

  • @sandrijntje "I just thoroughly dislike your politicians." MOst of walloons hate them too, like me. But we have no good politicians so we have to vote for bad... or don't vote but it changes nothing

  • @sandrijntje I mean, how is it fair that Flanders votes for a rightist government (and very much so, the only significant leftist parties are SP.A and Groen!) but will get a leftist government? Mainly because they are trying to keep the Flemish majority party out? That's ridiculous. And would very much be solved by a one person, one vote country-wide election like you proposed.

  • @FlorentChif I'd never say that all Walloons are lazy etc (though I do know a few prime examples), I hate generalizations. I know lazy Walloons, but I also know very hardworking people there who also happen to speak fluent Dutch (I went to school in a town pretty close to Liege). It's like saying all Flemish are racist. We aren't. I love Wallonia, think it's really pretty and vacationy and all but I just thoroughly dislike your politicians. And I don't understand why that should be pushed on us.

  • @sandrijntje I just hate hearing some vlaamingen saying walloons are lazy, stupid, they want to colonize flanders with their french, etc... i can't say there are not lazy people here there are lazy people everywhere and i can't say wallonia is better (economically, politically, etc ..; speaking) because this is not true but here we are sad that wallonia is bad (not for all trust me) and we want to improve everything. So I want to go back and delete regions and linguistic borders.
