I still say that the USS Washington should have NEVER been scrapped. She needed to be saved and preserved for her actions in WW2

@Tyco200 Britain was the dominant sea power for 130 years. Trafalgar through to WWII. They established most of the tactics that were used in WWII, (Including using a carrier to attack Battleships) and should I remind you that all battleships made after 1910 are called dreadnoughts because HMS Dreadnought was so revolutionary that Naval Planners had to rewrite the book from scratch. If Japan's ships were so bad, then why did it take the US 4 years and far greater numbers to defeat them?

What happened to NC between the end of WW2 and her coming to Wilmington?

@battingriver commercials make youtube free :D

@Tyco200 u dont even know what u talking about ....... get some book and read how many bomb and torpedo take to sunk a ijn heavy cruiser .... and i dont talk about a battleship
-
@artacania Because:
1. Britain and Japan never built good ships.
2. America's battleships were the best.
3. Russia and Japan built pig-shit.
4. France was okay. :)!
Keep bitching, grammarless!

@notsureyou The NCs immunity zone for 16" gunfire was only 21,000-26,000yds which was considered inadequate. Her area for 14" gunfire was 19,000-30,000yds. So, you're correct. Under the Washington Treaty they were allowed to 16" guns; the London Treaty only allowed 14" guns. Both limited tonnage to 35,000 tons standard displacement. They weren't able to add any more armor without going over on weight. Lessons they learned from NC allowed them to make the South Dakotas with better protection.
-
@AlabamaSoldier The South Dakotas were not designed to "replace" the North Carolina. There were design changes that came from lessons learned from the NC. They were superior in many ways, with better deck armor and fields of fire for her 5"guns. Her underwater protection was considered by many to be inferior, learned after the NC's torpedo hit. Also, I have spoken to former South Dakota sailors who said they were very cramped, while the NC was considered roomy which helps with fatigue & morale.
-
@scaryplague The "later" South Dakotas used the same 16" Mk6 guns as North Carolina. All US battleships starting with North Carolina up to the Iowas used the Mk38 gun director with either the Mk8 or Mk13 FD Radar and the Mk1A fire control computers. This system took into account many factors to plot a firing solution. Everything I've seen (including after action reports) & crew I've spoken to have said they were very accurate even past 30,000yds. And a 16" gun is a bit of overkill for a Maru.
