St Phillips Street Breakdown (Oct 22nd 2011 version)

The Hot Five Jazzmakers (all 7 of 'em) play at the Lanc' in Kitchener, Ontario, around once a month during the club season and here is a track I recorded last Saturday October 22nd 2011.
I (Brian Towers) am off-stage, of course, with my movie camera for this feature. Two great clarinets playing with passion in "St Phillips Street Breakdown", a George Lewis original. Janet Shaw and Mick Lewis are the two clarinets. Mick was our guest for the day, as Andrej our trumpet player had to miss the gig due to his day-job commitments. Also guesting was Abbey Sholzberg on string bass, as our regular guy, Bryan Day is in hospital.
The other regular players are Jamie Macpherson - banjo; Reide Kaiser - piano and Gary Scriven - drums.
The number is real tear-up and the capacity crowd loved it. There is nothing like two reed players going flat out, with a fine rhythm section laying down the chords and the beat.
This is the second time I have presented a youtube of The Hot Five Jazzmakers performing "St Phillips Street Breakdown" the previous one was from May 2004 The earlier version has Jan Shaw on alto sax and Mick Lewis on clarinet but a different rhythm section. It took place at a private party but the same energy level is there!
