In fact, the tempo for the first part of this is too FAST. Silence can create dramatic tension. Great singing, however. Dernesch's voice is HUGE. . . .

staging too stiff.

Dernesch in her day was one of the most beautiful dramatic sopranos on stage. Here, at age 60, she commands the imperious and icy princess. Great career. Brava to Gauci's love Angelica!

This scene is really challenging ... it is difficult to keep the tension and the emotion between the princess and angelica when the tempo is so slow. Puccini was a master at his craft. we are doing this opera at ASU in March.

Gorgeous voices... but my main problem is with the stage direction. You can almost tell that our performers here want to move more on the stage but were probably told not to and keep it to a minimum as part of the performance. On OCCASION this works, but this work is too emotional to not move around, and I feel it's less dramatic than it's supposed to be.

Would love to see more of this production. Dernesch, back to her mezzo-soprano roots, is excellent. Gauci's performance is also of the highest order. Thank you for the clip!
