the only way to become the greatest hacker, in theory, is hooking your brain directly into the whole system itself and becoming the deus ex machina...

You could still find them. Yes the trace would be back to your own network. But you can time the anomaly from start to finish, and get a timeframe of the war driver ( hacker on wheels/foot ). Then you can scan the street cameras during that frame and see who leaves and/or, shows up during that frame.
You can then back track the cameras to their original location, or forward track to their next.
Fact: Every network can be hacked.
Fact: Every hacker leaves a trace. ( Even "Old-School" )
