A song written about the American Civil War, said to have been based on an incident at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland, a "border state" where many families had relatives fighting for both sides, as did my own, with one great grandfather a Union general and another an officer/surgeon in "Stonewall" Jackson`s Confederate brigade. The two knew one another and remained friends after the war.
The banjo is a ca. 1890 George Washburn; too bad the lighting`s so bad as the inlay is right pretty. It`s strung with gut from some unfortunate critter, not really the former family cat, accusations notwithstanding.
Apologies for my voice and to the memory of Charlie Poole from whose recording I first heard the song.

  • The South was doing what they believed was right at that time. The South had the right to suceed.

GOD BLESS THE CONFEDERACY and ROBERT E. LEE

    DEO VINDICE

  • Suceed?...

  • "Suceed"?.......

  • Now, now...One of those soldiers was a Union boy (the one who shot his brother...) Having had as a great grandfather (Charles G.W. Macgill) a surgeon with Stonewall Jackson`s Brigade and another (Pennock Huey) a Union Colonel I see both sides pretty clearly.

  • whats the name of this song

  • GOD BLESS THE CONFEDERACY.

  • I love ole confederate songs. SOme union songs to. But I think the union was hypocritical and corrupt. They denied the South freedom to trade with England which was a right by the founding fathers, They placed heavy taxes on the southern trade gave them bad pay for their goods and took away and obtained their land prior to the war. I dont support slavery or nothin slavery was on both sides not just the south. But my opinion is The Confederacy had the best reason to fight Deo Vindice DIXIE rules!

  • God save the South

  • my bad "secede"

  • I love the Union. The present, and the past Union. The South had no right to destroy the union between the states, however the North did not ever help the matter by killing the Confederate rights. . . .

And it was an extremely horrid fight that need not be fought. . . . I'm just happy it turned out the way it did -- I couldn't stand seeing colored men busting their backs for Caucasians like me. . . .

I love all you Americans out there. . . southern and northern. :D

  • sad song
