I learned in Elkins, West Virginia 30 years ago---and it never leaves you! Got to clog to Willy Nelson's son at Pig out in the Park, in Spokane this Sept.
Ask for lessons or dance groups on your local Craigslist---and go with a friend--

i am trying to figure out how to get involved in one of these groups as a beginner without the seasoned vets loathing me.

These are nice folks. However, you're better off taking lessons, rather than trying to join a team right off the bat. If you're good, and you get out an dance, people will notice. Good luck!

and where was the indian steps ??

The "Indian" step is the one where they swing one leg out while the other foot "chugs" on the floor. It has a tom-tom like sound to it that is the reason for the name.
