It is very easy to make your own leather dye out of stuff you probably have at your house already. Namely rusty steel wool and vinegar. Always have a clean workspace, cause this is liquid rust. This also works on oak as well. Many thanks to Blackrose in showing me how to do this.

  • Sorry, no. Only on things with tannins in them, like leather, or oak.

  • I'm not entirely sure. The item where the dye has faded is more than likely already sealed, and something I didn't mention, is that this only works on veg tan leather, so if it's a garment, and it's already sealed and not veg tanned, then it probably won't work. Baking soda mixed with some water in a spray bottle will do the trick, I'm not sure on proportions.

  • Does this work with fabrics like cotton?

  • Very interesting! Can you do this to leather where the dye has faded? I want to re-dye a saddle that has faded so I can sell it. You mention it will stink and to add baking soda and water to it. Do you add it to the vinegaroon or to the leather afterwards? What ratio? Thank you!

  • I am so doing that thank you
