Yeah, I was bashed in college on my way back to my apt. in 1999. No one told me that there were neo-Nazi skinheads in southern Iowa!

The statistic that you cite a 3:42 from their website is correct. It looks like they just needed to add "because of bias" after "LBGT individuals".

I like the way these crimes are kept track of, but creating different punishments for the same crime based on the motivation is just saying these groups are different and should be treated differently. I kill a man, I go to prison. I kill a man because he's gay, I go to prison longer. That doesn't seem right. We should keep track of crimes based on such discrimination, but we should punish them ust the same.

There are too many people who think that violence against someone simply because they are different is OK, and that's why hate crime should be a more severe penalty. We don't have true equality. We have a black president, and I know people who still use the "n" word. Prejudice is wrong and the law must recognize that.

Well, motive is a factor. For example, someone who kills a man due to hitting him in a car unintentionally while DUI is manslaughter. Punishable, but it was an accident, not so severe. Someone who kills someone to rob them is worse, but still a one-off thing. Someone who kills someone out of hate for a group they belong to is not only a murderer, they also demonstrating threat of murder to the group to which the victim belongs. That warrents more severe punishment still.

There is already a simple answer that I came to several years ago: most vocal churches are ignorant, indignant, idiots. why are we bothering to acknowledge them with their lies if it doesn't change laws. To quote a anonymous writer: Jesus hated the gays, and that means they're illegal. That's what separation of church and state means, right?' if we stop paying attention to them, they go away. simple bully psychology. they want a reaction, so don't give them one.
