Roamin' In The Gloamin'
words and music by Harry Lauder
submitted by Betty Lauder Hamilton

verse 1
I've seen lots o' bonnie lassies, trav'-llin' far and wide,
But my heart is centred noo on bonnie Kate McBride.
And al-tho I'm no' a chap that throws a word away,
I'm surprised mysel' sometimes at a' I've got to say,

Chorus
Roamin' in the gloamin' on the bonnie banks o' Clyde.
Roamin' in the gloamin' wae my lassie by my side.
When the sun has gone to rest, That's the time we love the best.
O, it's lovely roamin' in the gloamin'!

verse 2
One nicht in the gloamin' we were trippin' side by side.
I kissed her twice, and asked her once if she would be my bride.
She was shy so was I we were baith the same
But I got brave and braver on the journey comin' hame

repeat chorus

verse 3
Last nicht efter strollin' we got hame at half past nine
Sitting at the kitchen fire I asked her to be mine.
When she promised, I got up and danced the Hie-lan' fling.
I've just been at the jew'ller's and I've picked a nice wee ring.

repeat chorus

  • my parents used to play his songs when we were very small in 1956 in philly, after we had moved here from glasgow, but my parents are from ireland... love his songs, such a treat to find music on here... thanks.

  • I like this song, it's not full of enuendo or fowl mouthed meanings It just tells of a guy and a girl who love their time together, It's a good song w/o vulgarities. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • This is my Mother's favorite song! In honor of her 87th birthday yesterday, this is for you Mom. Happy Birthday!

  • i grew up with my dad and grandma singing this. cool to hear the original.

  • I am visiting Glasgow right now (on the banks of the Clyde River) and passed a pub called Lauders Bar. Don't know if this is a coincidence or not.

  • When I was a little girl we had an old Victrolla crank phonograph. This was the record player I listened to and this song was on one of the records. I would crank up the phonograph and listen to the music until the crank ran down then crank her up again, Another one of the songs I listened to was called "So I Took the Fifty Thousand Dollars." Have you ever heard this song? I would like to hear it again.

My parents house burned along with the phonograph.
