Does/has anyone considered the 'temporal' thing? At the top of the elevator time moves slower than at the base... There has never been a physical connection between two different 'time zones' so to speak. My guess might be that from the ground the cable would appear to arc slightly to the west though instrumentation would not record this. Of course, communication might be interesting, satellites use time delay for relays. Those millionths of seconds can be crucial to CPU sync?

Actually time moves more slowly at your head than your feet when you are standing up. You are a physical connection between 'time zones'.

I used that very same joke once, it's a good one. Probably THE scientific principle behind the mystery of people who
"leap before they look".
Then there is: Does your nose run and your feet smell? You must be upside down!

Another thing that' would be a problem is getting the elevator up and down through the earths atmosphere without burning up or exploding. You would need more thrusters on the bottom of the counter weight because the tension endured apon the carbon nano tube ribons would eventually make the counter weight bounce back at earth. Another pridicament would be wind down on earth, that would make the ribon sway. It would also be a large tarrorist target. So al together, i dont thik that it is vary prac

This is an issue I was thinking ... not so much the materials or the millions of pieces of space junk......but what about the effect of the cable (or series of cables it should be) travelling though the atmosphere?
The base would have to be at the equator in a neutral / friendly country (Brasil ?) where little or no weather could be a factor.

There are a cuple of reasons for why this consept is impractical. The first is that it would be dificult to get the counter weight into geostationary orbit. And even if you could acomplish that, you would have to have thrusters keeping the ribon from turning then snaping, so you would have to have a constant supplys of fuel. Also, you's need a cupple of things for humans to exist up there, like life support systems. That weighs alot. That like bringing up a whole nother rocket up all together.
