Soo Line 2719 is a 4-6-2 Pacific built in 1923 by ALCO, spending her career on the Soo Line Railroad pulling both freight and passenger trains. Retired in 1959, it was displayed at a city park in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In 1996, the Locomotive and Tower Preservation Fund raised money to return the locomotive to operating condition and achieved its goal in less than 3 years.
To ensure long term protection for the engine and the prospect of more operating time, the Locomotive and Tower Preservation Fund leased the engine to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Today the Museum operates the engine only a few weekends or charters each year. Our DVD, "Steam: Trackside & Inside", shows how the locomotive is brought back to life for the first revenue trip of the season. We also show you highlights from two all-day trips from Duluth to Two Harbors, Minnesota including a cab ride.
We salute the people of the Locomotive and Tower Preservation Fund and the Lake Superior Railroad Museum for their dedication and hard work so we can all enjoy the sights, the sounds, and the smells of our railroad heritage. We hope our program will inspire you to visit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
"Steam: Trackside & Inside" also features stories about Iowa Interstate QJ #7081 operating in western Iowa, and a chapter showing Milwaukee Road #261 in operation at the Milwaukee Road Historical Society 2001 Convention in Montevideo, MN.
