The guruvayur Dorai of old is so much different from today. Back in those days he had that power and energy about him

I have not had the fortune of listening to Dr Ramani's Guru, Mali in a live concert. He was leisurely, had several novelties which listeners looked fwd. to eagerly, and also chose select parts of items for lightning speed rendering with the profoundest beauties of Carnatic music not available with any other musician. His Thaala (or Laya) sense was supernatural, and challenged Mani Iyer. I have several recordings of Mali (incdg.MP3). Ramani shares his Guru's excellence, but has a separate style.

    B. The audiences are somehow able to separate out the music, as it were and enjoy it!! It is not enough if the auditorium acoustics are great, the amplifier systems too must be sensitive ones for bringing out the subtle sounds of vocal and instrumental music. The 'sabha' people are somehow so negligent in this respect. And when the halls are open ones, the combined effects of bad amplification plus ambient noises tear you apart.

The amplifier system is at fault, and perhaps, the mike attendant too. Flute is a divine instrument. MS Subbulakshmi sang 'kaatrinilay varum geetam' on the charms of the flute playing of Lord Krishna.Due to worn out amplifier systems and outdated types of them predominantly in use in India, Carnatic music concerts which typically have small audiences get marred, but audiences somehow allow for (that is, tolerate!) the intrusive noises marring the whole concert.

But yes, Dr Ramani is a flute maestro with a superb command of Raga and Tala, and Bhava of music. Appreciation and thanks indeed for uploading this video.

Flute is too harsh on the amplifier system

It's amazing, sir just taught me what he played at 47 seconds in. The Thom thaka tha dhim (rest 4) thom thaka tha dhim (rest 4) thom thaka tha dhim, to land on 1 beat after samam (or half however you look at it). It's great to see what you just learned applied in a concert.
