I modified this Mamod kit back in the 1980's to create a Heywood style loco in 16mm scale, but here it is running with a 7/8" scale driver and stock. I struggled to make it run slow enough for single handed filming, so have used the iMovie half speed option for all but one clip. This lowers the tone of the chuff and makes the little Mamod sound a bit like a Roundhouse Fowler!

The loco has replacement wheels and cylinders, a regulator and bodywork fabricated from steel and brass. The lubricator and sandboxes were made from old cartridge cases and the chimney is part of a wartime stirrup pump. The gas burner is a modified Roger Marsh one and the boiler is original.

And yes, I did spot that the brake van roof wasn't on properly, but only when I was editing. But did you spot Bodkin's tail?

  • Great Video Chris.

What a delightful little engine! Looks good in slow mo, moves more realistically and the low chuffer beat sounds great!

  • @Firrboxfryup - Thanks Jamie - I must admit that I rather like the slow mo too :-)

  • I missed Bodkin's tail. My wife is a big fan of Bodkin.

  • @floamman - Well when I looked, I could hardly see it either - it was much clearer when editing! Look for a grey tail to the right of the loco at 1 min 50 secs. He is waving it about - but I must try to get more of him in for his fans ;-)

  • For those using professional equipment Windows Movie Maker also has a half speed button which is very effective.

I have sleeved the Summerlands chuffer on my Ruby so that it acts as a restrictor as well as a chuff pipe. That keeps the frantic speed down. My own Mamod woill run at a scale 1mph, so there's scope for calming Lizzie even further.

  • @DavidHalfpenny - Thanks David, I had forgotten that you had combined the two. I must give that a try - it is a sleeve over the sound slot leaving just a slit along the top if I remember right. It guess it will sacrifice some of the chuff though.........

    Cheers

  • @Summerlandsteam @Summerlandsteam Hi Chris, Well, the way we look at it, it's enormous fun to run our Roundhouse locos 'live' in the garden with chuffers chuffing away nicely, but it's also great fun to make these little movies, using every technique available, to entertain and inform. The two are quite different, and in our book, shouldn't be confused. Also, can we have more of Bodkin, our kids just love your beautiful cat. Keep chuffing!

  • @PineTreeJunction - Thanks Lindsay, I always really appreciate your comments! I have always resisted the 50% button as I like the sound to be pure and honest - but I have to say that it is a great tool!!

    Cheers

  • @chuffchas - Thanks for the comment - especially about the Ken Burns! This is only the second time I have used it on video so am just getting used to it. And I agree about the "scamper", but the problem is that the close-in video makes it look more like a sprint ;-)

    Cheers

    Chris
