The climate crisis demands urgent action to transition to a low carbon future. Canada is going in the wrong direction we are stuck in the tar sands. The federal and Albertan governments are allowing huge extractions to continue in the tar sands, Canadas fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. Our commitment to being an energy super power that focuses on export-oriented energy trade is being allowed to trump needed action on climate change and energy security. Climate justice demands that we address the root causes contributing to the climate crisis including unsustainable production, consumption and trade that are driven by corporate led globalization. Real solutions must be based on democratic accountability, ecological sustainability and social justice.

December 7-18 marks a significant moment in time for global action on the climate crisis. This is when the Fifteenth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (often referred to as COP15) will held in Copenhagen, Denmark, bringing together representatives from 200 countries with the aim of getting agreement on common action to address the climate crisis.

The Council of Canadians will be on the ground in Copenhagen, providing updates on negotiations inside the conference and taking part in numerous events and climate justice movement activities happening outside.

The Council of Canadians joins the millions of voices in the global climate justice movement in calling for global action that leads to real emission reductions in a fair and equitable manner, including stronger commitments and actions by the Global North.
