  • we couldn't push this barge as it had a H beam welded across the stern which would rip our pushers to bits , At the time this was the quickest and easiest way to move the stone barge to the mooring . yes i agree that there are other ways to do it but this method worked best for our type of boat .

  • That's not to the way to do it.That face wire gives way,and that fool watching is a dead man!

  • @pocatellodave how would you do it then , please give your views as i'm all ears , p.s its not a wire its rope , and also thanks for calling me a fool

  • @pocatellodave If you read the what he said below the video you would see the reason they didn't push the barge. You should read what is said along with the video before leaving comments making yourself look stupid.

Face wire, wing wire, the thing is I wouldn't do it the way they did.The only time we pulled tows, was in the winter when the river froze over.We faced in to one loaded barge and used it take break the ice in the front of the tow boat.We pulled the rest, single file.I worked for Valley line, and Material Service for many years, and if I would have been the Mate...watchman on that boat, the guy standing in harms way, gets his butt reamed out good!

I was thinking you could just get behind the barge and push it like your supposed to!?If that is a line..."rope"then if it parts it can do a lot of damage, and I will downsize the fool part,to not being very clever standing behind a line with a lot of tension on it!

  • @pocatellodave what do you know!, thats a rope keeping te head of the barge a bit more to portside< the main force is on the mid boulder of the barge ,conected to the stb front of the tug!, we dutchies know what where doing!

  • I'd probably prefer to do that on the short or with gate lines with that motion, but hey if its only a short hop then a standard 3 line hip tow like that is fine. I wouldn't call you a fool, course the guy calling your bow/backing line a face wire might be. I would however tell that deck hand to get around the corner of the coming if he needed to be out there.

  • @THOHEEKS hi the reason we were moving the barge on the hip was due to the unloading barges anchor spread and we have better control over our barge than towing , plus we only moved the stone barge a mile or so to a mooring where another tug would tow it back to ijmuiden .
