Working in cooperation with Springfield Public Schools, Willamalane Park and Recreation District is offering a new, low-cost before-school program for children in grades 1-5.
The morning program will be offered at three elementary schools: Douglas Gardens Elementary, Ridgeview Elementary and Thurston Elementary. If there is sufficient interest among families from other schools, additional sites may open. A waiting list will be compiled at Willamalane Center, 250 S. 32nd St. in Springfield.
"We've heard from several families whose students attend Yolanda, Mount Vernon and other elementary schools, and we may be able to add additional sites soon," said Terri Fackrell, program manager. "The key is we have to hear from families first."
Supervised activities such as reading, board games and coloring are scheduled from 7 to 8:15 a.m., after which students will be dismissed for breakfast and then turned over to school supervision.
Program fees are $20 a month for students registered in the schools' free/reduced meal program, or $45 a month for students who do not qualify for the free/reduced meal program. Monthly fees will not be prorated, and part-time rates are not available.
