This is an AP Physics B level force problem. We have an attwood machine, which is simply two blocks attached by a string. One of them is on a level surface, and one of them is suspended. We consider the string and the pulley to be massless. The key to this solution is considering the free body diagrams for each individual block, and linking the two equations through the tension force and the acceleration, which must be the same for each block.
