A common problem with Asperger's syndrome is how literally we take things, compared to neurotypicals -- we don't interpret things the way others do. It's frustrating at the time, but can also be good for laughs, as this skit demonstrates.

If I had a conversation with someone with Aspergers ad something like this happened would it be considered impolite to laugh? Please let me know. My little brother does the same thing, but he's usually just being a smart ass. For example during a cell phone call-"Don where are you?" "On a road." "*sigh* Which road?" "A straight one."

@Niccy530 To laugh or not to laugh... it usually depends on the individual. If you don't know the person directly, then it's okay to laugh a little, say a small "I'm sorry," and then (unlike the receptionist here) skip directly to the specific, non-idiomatic question.

Personally I'm on roughly the same page as your brother. My family has to be very careful when they ask me to "make me a sandwich."

Rofl. This always happens to me. Like today, I was at a field trip to an art museum, and our teacher told us to look at this particular piece, and tear it apart, and say what we think it means... so guess what I said.

I have AS and am litteral like that sometimes. Fortunatly, most people just find it cute. Eventualy I get what they mean and I say, "Oh did you mean figurativaly?"

I have Aspergers' Syndrome and I can take most things figuratively. Upon reading about people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, it is a bit strange to believe that they are more vulnerable to literal thinking. After seeing this video, I can see what it is like for a person with a high functioning Autistic condition to take things literally and how difficult it can be to keep up a good conversation. I've also seen and heard Rain Man taking things literally.
