While climbing the 14,064' Humboldt Peak a Colorado 14er in the Sangre De Cristo Range for the Ham-14er event I decided to equip my pack goat Peanut with a goat-cam (Tachyon XC Helmet cam). Once we reached the saddle 12.9k' to began our accent on the 14k summit I mounted the camera on Peanut's saddle and activated it.

I must admit I wound up with what I think is some fascinating and most unusual footage! It's almost as if my goat Peanut knew what he was doing as a videographer! (and darn smart goat he is!) It's most interesting seeing the terrain from a goat's perspective as he surveys the trail and decides which way is the best route around obstacles always keeping his alpha goat in sight! Also as he leans into the abyss and stares at the valley below I wondered what he's thinking ...if at all?

I wound up with almost 2-hours of video which is unwatchable in it's raw form. But I've edited it down to less than 10 minutes with a techno beat. The camera's ability to deal with extreme lighting was challenged thus some of the video is a little contrasty but this sort of adds to the effect. Forgive me if you find it dragging a little at the end it's because I lived the experience and still can't get enough of it! That altitude is addictive watch out!

  • Did you pay Peanut the "union rate" for his film making? He did a great job! I heard he wants a steadicam for his next film.

  • If Peanut used a SteadyCam I'd have to edit to some lame slow music which wouldn't allow me to hide all my poor editing skills!

  • Thanks for sharing that great film with us!!!! Loved it.

  • Love your goats. Wish my wethers were so mellow. They're a couple of hyperactives. Also, that music is very fitting for goats!

  • PS I am seriously envious of your big beautiful wethers. I need to breed my girls and get some boys on the team. Hey I'm also working on equipping them with APRS beacons, with solar recharge. 21st century digital goats!

  • @goathiker what kind of "close encounters" are you referring to? Here in Idaho wolves are becoming a serious concern among people with pack stock and even dogs in the back country. And of course coyotes, bears, and cougars are something to watch out for. I've never worried for myself, but I genuinely worry about my goats any time I leave them in camp alone while I'm off hiking/fishing.

  • crazy LOL

  • Try contacting your local 'Humane Society' or check with the County Planning Dept who are in charge of zoning and regulations for your city.

  • thanks....and also do u know if the city of los angeles ....allow goats as pet...i tries to search it...but i couldnt fin anything...

  • Most definitely! But some cities don't consider 'livestock' to be 'pets' thus you aren't allowed to keep them within city limits.
