Diving with Harbor Seals - Monterey CA

March 1, 2009: MacAbee Beach. Conditions were predicted to be fantastic, and they really were! Viz was at least 40ft, no surge or current. A nice leisurely dive out towards the Aquarium and back. We ran into 3-4 playful harbor seals, some got a little too close for comfort!

The seal that popped right in front of the camera scared the crap out of me. Wouldn't imagined how you felt.

@bubbathesecound Heh, even worse, my buddy was watching the whole time, and said the seal was right there for more than 30 seconds, messing with my gear, before deciding to pop up in front of the camera!

I literally just took that exact same dive today, same site, and kelp bed.

Great!! I haven't been to MacAbee in several months, but I really miss the seal interactions that seem to be a hallmark of the site. How was your dive? Did you get some good viz (things look like they've improved from the el nino storms all Jan-Feb).

It totally exceeded our expectations! This weekend is looking good too, I'm going to try to bring my A-game, as we're diving Lobos on Saturday.

I love that site! It's where I did my certification dive about five years ago. Awesome area - got lost in the kelp during the navigation portion (we shouldn't have gone into it at all, but we figured it out and got ourselves back on track.) Those seals are friendly - though one zipped by running along the pipe so fast that its wake knocked my mask off. Those guys can *move* when they want to. :)
