"They left the message: 'We are going to kill you.'"
Edwin Garcia, 40, was born in Colombia and trained as a doctor.
After qualifying, he joined the police force as a police medical officer. But after participating in a police investigation into paramilitary activities, he was targeted by militants and forced to flee his home. He began moving from city to city, hotel to hotel, cutting contact with his family in an attempt to elude his pursuers. Finally, with the assistance of UNHCR, he applied for and obtained status as a refugee to leave Colombia and resettle in Calgary, Canada. Edwin began studying English and worked as a care giver, construction worker and cleaner. At one point he was working 17 hours a day. He rose to become a manager and started his own company. He also hopes to reestablish his medical credentials so that he can work in his chosen profession. "I'm not OK not being a doctor. I want to help people," he says. "Everything is a challenge, not a barrier." To learn more about refugees, visit www.unhcr.org.
