Under the leadership of Wayne Phillips and as part of his ATOP training program, I learned about a variety of systems of the 737 including hydraulics, electrical, fuel system, pressurization, pneumatics, anti-ice, fire protection, flight control systems, and even (through an optional add-on) the flight management computer! Training included everything from starting it up and running through checklists all the way through diagnosing and troubleshooting in-flight failures. After a long day of ground school, we wake up in the middle of the night to fly an hour of time in a Continental 737-800 full motion, FAA approved simulator. Half that time is acting as captain and half the time is acting as first officer. In addition, you get an extra hour in the simulator observing one of the other crews.

As you watch the video, keep in mind that this is my first time ever flying the 737-800 and neither myself nor Erik have practiced any of these flows, call-outs, etc. Although the routine in the simulator is normally very basic, Wayne will complicate things based upon your experience and how well you seem to be doing.

This was well worth the few hundred bucks it costs, so I recommend it for any pilot that wants the experience of flying "big iron". See http://www.b737.com/ for more info!

Unfortunately, YouTube limits me to 10 minutes (or shortly more) so I had to keep this really trimmed down to just the very highlights.

  • I took my father to this experience for his birthday a few years ago. Definately the best flying experience we had, ever. I would go again anytime. Wayne Phillips is a great instructor and professional. I think we threw an engine failure on approach and an engine fire after V1. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed the memory again...
