I can't believe how many macho comment I've read about this video !

There were only men in Tolkien's novel. That says something about the period he lived as women were not considered equals of men. That also says something about Tolkien himself and how he viewed women.

I'm glad the directors / producers of the Hobbit decided to give place to women ; you have to adapt to the century you live in.

And good looking dwarves are not only appealing to women ; they are also appealing to men !

I watched The Hobbit expecting to see Gimli-like dwarves, and was pleasantly surprised to see hot Thorin. The actor's really good too, so it's a win-win.

On the hot dwarves debate: I've seen the argument of (don't recall exact term) species variation. Young people of the race of Men look more like Elves, then they change as they grow older. Orlando is a lot bigger than he was in LOTR because of natural body changes. Fili and Kili are quite young and could look more dwarf like when older. And Tolkien did seem to write that higher class people were prettier; hence Thorin, Fili and Kili. I don't have a problem with it if they can act, and they can.

And just to finish my rant, they chose not only good looking actors but also actors who can act ; not like in some movies where a bimbo chick is chosen just because she's a bimbo chick but can't align 3 words together (look at Jack the Reacher for example : Laetitia Casta has been cast on her plastic ; not for her actress qualities ; she has none !).

Alright, I'm finished, I feel so much better already !

I agree with you about the almighty dollar being the enemy of art, but the bottom line is, those that want to make art need funding, so those with the cash get final say so. I think Peter Jackson is the perfect person to make these beloved books come to life, & his changes aren't THAT wild and crazy! As far as The Hobbit goes, there are only two dwarves, which are the younger ones, that are "attractive." If they made it just like the book, it would actually be pretty hard to tell them all apart.

Dude they made 10x the money they invested... Could've kicked Arwen out EASILY and put fucking Glorfindel in as it should be. And a bunch of other changes as well. Real works of art don't need to be sold like commodity, they have to keep their independence. But alas such is the economic system that we find ourselves living in... People have lost inner compass to true values of life and replaced it with the almighty dollar. Shame...

If the films were made just as Tolkien wrote them for purists' sake, they'd probably be easily 10 hours a piece, & guess what? No production company could afford to do that. Some things also don't translate/adapt well from book to film, such as Tom Bombadil. These films cost a huge amount of money to produce, & they have to bring in pretty much twice that to make it worth the studio's while in order to fund sequels. Old school fans need new ones to watch so our beloved stories can come to life!

  • EpsilonRanger .

Uh, do you even know what you're talking about? And firstly I'll ask, why does it matter if PJ's working with two women? One is his wife; Fran Walsh, and the other; Phillippa Boyens, is probably a bigger Tolkien fan than you or anyone else. Are you sexist or something? Secondly, has has Jackson sold out? He sold out because like two of the dwarves have some type of attractiveness? Would you prefer him to go out an cast scraggly old hobo's as the dwarves? Your reasoning is ridiculous.

If it's not made for women then it shouldn't be introduced to them. A few decades ago audiences were very much different, now they're merging us, turning us to something else, modifying us and our tastes to better swallow their products... Guess what changed? Corporate greed increased, Hollywood decided to destroy art for profit. It's sickening. LotR is my favorite movie of all times but all I'm saying is it could've been perfect if they only left it how Tolkien had made it.
