A tribute to the Scott Expedition to the South Pole (1910 - 1913) with footage from the 1985 miniseries THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH (script Trevor Griffiths, dir. Ferdinand Fairfax).

In order of appearance:

Lt "Birdie" Bowers - Sylvester McCoy
Captain R.F. Scott - Martin Shaw
Dr Edward Wilson - Stephen Moore
Captain "Titus" Oates - Richard Morant
P.O. "Taff" Evans - Pat Roach
Surgeon Atkinson - Robin Soans

Holst's "Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age" is here performed by the Berliner Philharmonik, conducted by Colin Davis. My thanks go to ApsisApocynthion, who first posted this sublime musical performance on his YouTube channel.

Many thanks also to greenheart45 (for some kind assistance with technical issues and for first pointing me towards the brilliance that is THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH) and to babydraco for advice during the beta editing stage.

  • Captain Scott & his brave companions were my childhood heroes, a poignant reminder of loyalty, trust & love, something missing from the world today

  • @BritishSteel1965 This comment made my day! The more I research Scott and his companions, the more I appreciate what extraordinary human beings they were. Your comment sums things up perfectly. Thank you so much!

  • This mini-series had a real impact on me, it's amazing what these people endured, an admirable and inspiring story of events.

  • Great! For another apt apt tribute to Scott, you could maybe have a look at

'kcazyt birdie, the doctor and me'

  • What was it some 11 miles left to go yet seemed so far…in that harsh bitter weather would be more than enough to bring down the toughest of men.

  • They accepted the risks and knew they couldn’t make it back given their conduction and food supplies exhausted no fuel for heating what a way to go in a No Mans Land. I brought the region2 DVD Scott of the Antarctica, early this month and it was hard to get over afterwards it really had an impact

The holst music fits the depressing images it seems such a downer in parts.

God what an awful place this is.

    Captain Scott.

  • the determination of the fellow who put up the British flag worked well with the music at that point; the showcasing the horrors that befell them for the climax, and then finally the discovery of them...ok, I honestly thought you did marvelously well with the music, and for nine minutes, that's no mean feat. Congrats my dear, congrats!

  • This is extremely well done. So many good moments that used the music wonderfully. I particularly liked: the opening with the flashbacks; how when the brass band started at the docks was when the brass section of the music began (also worked well with the joyousness of the occasion); eading into the strings section for the excitement of things to come followed by the dramatic chord of realising the Norwegians got there first; (comment continued...)

  • Great!
