Many self publishers use a pen name to try to hide the fact they are self publishing. There are legitimate reasons for using a pen name, but hiding who you are is rarely one of them
But I think if I wrote about my own experiences of being a battered wife, alcoholic, junkie, murderer or something, I would prefer to remain anonymous, because people judge you by these things.
I'm sort of using a pen name here on YouTube. But now I love the name Freedom and and considering using the name for publishing.
But will I loose my buyers. Those being my established myspace and facebook etc. friends that know me by my real name? And also people from my past, etc.

I agree. People at times need to use pen names.

If you're a small publisher and debating on whether to use a pen name or not, due to branding or other considerations, check this video out.
