It's a good idea to wear gloves when handling specimens fixed in formaldehyde.

One might ask what triggers the plaque rupture because, if we know the reasons that cause it, we would be able to take measures to prevent a rupture and, therefore, the heart attack. There is a hot debate in the scientific community about the factors that trigger the rupture of plaque, but, to date, we do not know the reasons.

In the vast majority of heart attacks, a rupture occurs from the buildup of lipids within the artery wall. This rupture leads to clotting and a heart attack within seconds. The slow clogging is only around 12% of heart attacks. In other words your clogged by 20%, pass a stress test and then you suddenly die from a rupture.

It's unfortunate that diagnosis of advanced atherosclerosis is limited to angiography and ct calcium scoring. Without a 'Fantastic Voyage'-like method of imaging the coronary vessels, we're left, it seems, to extrapolate from several diagnostic tools- with the definitive escaping our grasp. I believe it's nearly half of all heart attacks are the first symptom the victim experiences, and over a third of all heart attacks are fatal events. Truly tragic.

I wish you could clean the arteries of plaque the way they do at the dentist. Why wasn't the scientific method invented 5,000yrs earlier so we could have cured this?
