This song was recorded in Germany, 1959. Evis, of course, made no professional recordings while he was stationed overseas, although RCA was applying serious pressure on him to do so. At this point, it's hard to know why he didn't succumb. Certainly, the Colonel was more in favour of underexposure than overexposure, but he suggested to Elvis' father,Vernon, that they buy a tape recorder to coax Elvis into recording some gospel songs. Vernon duly bought a Grundig recorder while Elvis was on maneuvers, and several tapes were recorded. "I Asked The Lord" introduced by a snatch of "Jingle Bells" was a minor standart. There had been versions by Kate Smith, George Beverly Shea, and others, but it was probably Mahalia Jackson's recording that Elvis remembered.
